Twenty-three year old AJ Starr grew up on a farm in northeast Alabama. He was born with Cerebral Palsy. The love and support of the entire Starr family in his hometown Centre was an important factor in his youth. AJ received his bachelor degree in May 2014 from The University of Alabama where he is on the football equipment staff. AJ is currently pursuing his master’s degree.
In late 2013, AJ’s life story received national attention and acclaim when it was featured on ESPN.
The story, “AJ and AJ: A Special Bond,” was produced by Tom Rinaldi and aired prior to the Sugar Bowl. A life-long Crimson Tide fan, AJ’s world was forever changed when he met the other AJ – AJ McCarron. McCarron is the Maxwell Award winning, Heisman Trophy runner-up quarterback of the Crimson Tide.
Since that fate-filled chance meeting in 2012, the trajectory of AJ’s life has continued rising to new heights. From childhood days riding his grandfather’s tractor, AJ’s own drive has forever allowed him to succeed. In June of 2014, AJ travelled to Washington, DC to be presented the prestigious “No Excuses Award.”
